About Soulstar

”I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring…”

…David Bowie said once about his work and Soulstar can subscribe to that. They like to experiment, without being vague. “We like real songs!” Hard, defiant and energetic, but also critical, funny, warm & loving. Electro meets rock and their great love for graphic design make their appearance special.

The four men of Soulstar are inspired by the diversity of Prince, David Bowie, The Gorillaz and Soulwax, the moods from Radiohead, Elbow and Faithless but also the energy from bands like The Police, Underworld, LCD Soundsystem and the Foo Fighters. Mix it up with the classic songwriting skills from the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Neil Young and you get a surprising blend. And like Bowie said:  “it won’t be boring.”

Background
Founded as a traditional P-Funk, soul & rock band alike Parliament, Bootsy Collins & Sly & the Family Stone, Soulstar released their first EP called ‘Bringing the Funk into the future baby!’ (2005). With success, they won the bandcontest ‘De Oogst van Overijssel’, we’re played at national radio (Kink FM) and their gig at Paradiso Amsterdam was broadcasted live on the Internet.

As from 2008 there was the big turn. Bandmembers have changed, but founder, composer, singer and bassplayer Gooswijn van Rees stayed. Together with  a new producer/keyboard player Iwan Blokzijl they worked hard on a new sound. Accompanied by new members Marco Nelemaat (drums) and Hubert Eggen (guitar). With they’re powerful mix of rock, pop, electro and many other styles and they’re strong focus on graphic design you could say they’ve formed a brand new band.
Members of Soulstar have credits in all kinds of different projects, like producing & composing the debut album of Dutch rapper Typhoon, supporting Bon Jovi at the Royal Beach Concert for 50.000 fans and a few bandmembers played successfully in the disco & rock gimmick band “The Band of Glory.”
